A MOTHER'S LOVE; Mama na Mama

On the 7th of March 2024, around 6:50 pm, I got off the call with both my dad and my mum, and tears began to flow. No matter how hard I act and how mature I pretend to be, I'll always be a child to the ones who brought me into this world. Love from both parents is undeniably beautiful, but for this post, I want to focus on the incomparable love of a mother.

A mother's love is truly exceptional, special, unique and beautiful. It persists regardless of our age. It's an extraordinary force that transcends time, age, and distance. It's amazing how my mother can sense when something's wrong with me, even from afar. Even when I attempt to conceal my emotions, she somehow sees and perceives through my disguise. The six-year-old me would never have imagined this level of understanding between my mother and I. I'm certain she would be immensely proud of the bond we now share.

Growing up, I was so scared of my mother. She was so strict, I mean, both my parents are strict, but they knew the delicate balance between discipline and indulgence. My father is also very strict, but growing up, I found it easier to confide in him. This is not because he says yes to us but because he apologized for minor grievances, he was easier to talk to, he looked at the grades in our results (A,B,C) rather than the positions(1st 2nd 3rd ). However, my mother's approach was vastly different. Instead of apologizing for her outbursts, she would use food to mend our disagreements. At times, you'll find yourself chatting and laughing with her, feeling joyful, only for the atmosphere to suddenly shift. She might start scolding you, saying "a child of God shouldn’t say this and say that." To me, she just spoils the fun (lol)

If your mother is anything like mine, trust me when I say she loves you deeply. We often misunderstand their love, especially when we're young. Nevertheless, these experiences shape us into better individuals. I mean, there are certain things that the world has come to accept as normal, but I personally disagree with them, and this viewpoint is largely shaped by the discipline instilled in me by both my parents. Look at me now, I engage in casual conversations with my mother, sharing thoughts I never thought I would. I've discovered myself becoming more open and vulnerable. There are moments when I hesitate to trouble my mum with trivial matters, yet there are other times when I reach out to her first, even for something as minor as menstrual cramps.

My mother always says ‘mama na mama,’ and this is so deep. While others may abandon you in difficult times, you see that woman you call your mother? Her love remains steadfast, embracing you despite your flaws and mistakes. A mother’s love expresses the value of acceptance and forgiveness.

Our mothers and making sacrifices, 5&6. Personally, I've witnessed my mother consistently prioritize the well-being of my siblings and me over her own needs. We can never count it all; is it the sleepless nights and endless hours of nurturing? I remember when I had surgery done and how my mother didn’t sleep until I was out of the theater. They took me in after we had returned home from morning prayers in church at about 8am ishhh, and I wasn’t out until 2am the next day. Although I heard she made trouble with the nurses because no one was giving her updates as the hours passed and she was a bit worried. I came out of surgery and I found this woman reading her bible and praying. How are you not sleeping at 2am?  How best do you define a mother’s love? How best do you explain sacrifice and selflessness?

We can never really talk about it enough; is it the sense of security and the unbreakable bond? Is it the support? Is it the comfort they provide? Is it the words of encouragement? A mother’s love is indeed a gift that blesses our lives in immeasurable ways. It is a love that shapes us, nurtures us, and empowers us to become the best versions of ourselves.

My babes, as we reflect on the beauty of a mother’s love, let us cherish and celebrate the incredible women (both biological and those who stood as our mothers) who have touched our lives with unwavering love and guidance. Give them their flowers now please.
